Misheard is an iPhone and iPad app that shows you what speech recognition heard when you said a word. This policy covers the app, and it covers misheard.app, which is a different thing with different answers.
The short version. The app has no Misheard backend or account, contains no analytics or advertising SDK, and does not send practice audio or transcripts to us. Practice history and saved recordings are stored on your device. Recognition runs on-device by default; disabling Keep speech on device may send audio to Apple.
The website is nearly the same story. It runs no analytics of any kind and sets no cookies. The educator form stores request details, and Cloudflare keeps standard hosting logs. These are described below under What the website stores.
What Misheard stores on your device
- The words and phrases you add, along with any note you attach to them.
- Your practice record: how many times each word was attempted, how often it was recognized, and the text recognition produced each time.
- Session history, including Off Script transcripts, words per minute and filler-word counts.
- Audio recordings of practice takes, but only if you switch on “Save my practice takes” in Settings. This is off by default. Off Script is never recorded.
- Your settings, such as whether recognition is restricted to on-device processing.
All of this is held in the app's own storage on your iPhone. It is removed when you delete the app, and you can delete any part of it at any time from Settings → Data.
Speech recognition, and the one time audio leaves your device
Misheard uses Apple's Speech framework to turn what you say into text. It has a setting called “Keep speech on device”, which is on by default. While it is on, recognition runs entirely on your iPhone and no audio is transmitted anywhere.
If you turn that setting off, Misheard may fall back to Apple's speech recognition servers, and in that case audio is sent to Apple to be transcribed. That processing is governed by Apple's Privacy Policy, not this one. We never receive that audio or the resulting text.
Note that iOS shows its own fixed wording when it first asks for speech recognition permission: it mentions sending speech data to Apple regardless of the setting above. That text comes from the operating system and cannot be changed by an app. What actually happens is determined by the setting.
What the app does not do
- No account, sign-in, or profile.
- No analytics, telemetry, crash-reporting or advertising SDK.
- No tracking or data sharing for advertising. Optional Apple speech processing is described above.
- No Misheard app backend. Practice works offline with Keep speech on device enabled.
- No contact list, photo, location or health data access.
What the website stores
Everything above is about the app. This site is mostly the same: no accounts, no cookies, and no analytics. Our host, Cloudflare, offers a page-view measurement script that it can add to pages as it serves them; it was on by default and we have turned it off, so there is now no analytics or measurement script on any page here, ours or anyone else's. You can check that yourself: view the source, or open your browser's network tab and look at what a page loads.
Word lists are not uploaded, at all
The list makers at misheard.app/l, misheard.app/lists
and on the teachers' page read your file in your own browser. The words are packed into the part
of the link that comes after the #, which browsers by design never send to a server.
The list contents are not included in the HTTP request to our site. Cloudflare may log a request for the page, but that request does not contain the shared words. Anyone you send the complete link to can read its list.
Nothing on these pages is loaded from anywhere else
Open a page here and every single thing it asks for (the markup, the stylesheets, the scripts, the typefaces) comes from misheard.app and nowhere else. No analytics, no tag manager, no advertising pixel, no embedded video, no social widget, no font served by somebody else.
That last one was not always true. The two typefaces used to be delivered by Fontshare, which meant a third party saw the IP address of everyone who read this page, including the part of it promising otherwise. They are now served from this domain. It is a small thing, and it is the kind of small thing that makes the rest of a policy worth believing.
The only links that go elsewhere are to the App Store and to Apple, and only if you click one.
Cloudflare hosts the site and, like any web host, keeps standard request logs including IP addresses so that it can serve pages and block attacks. We do not build anything on top of those and do not use them to follow anybody. Their handling is covered by Cloudflare's privacy policy.
The free copy for teachers
The form on the teachers' page is the one place on this site where we keep what you type. When a teacher requests an iOS code or joins the Android interest list we store:
- The first name and the email address entered on the form.
- The selected platform, request status, and which promo code was given out, if any, and when.
- The IP address the request came from, and the time of it.
- Whether the optional box for news about new word lists was ticked.
Why each one. The address is the key that stops a second code going to the same person, and it is how we reach you if the code does not redeem. The name is so the page and any email can address you rather than your address. The IP address is kept only to rate-limit the form, so that a script cannot drain a batch of codes in a minute; it is deleted about an hour after the request. The optional box is kept so that we can tell who agreed to hear from us and who did not.
This data is held in a small database at Cloudflare, in the same account that hosts the site. It is not sold, not rented, and not shared with anyone else. Asking for a code is not consent to be marketed at: if you leave the box unticked, the only email you would get from us is about the code itself.
Nothing about a student is involved at any point. There is nothing to be, because the app has no roster, no scores that leave a device, and no way for a teacher to see a student's practice.
To have your teacher record deleted, email hello@misheard.app from the address you signed up with and we will remove it. A code already redeemed cannot be taken back and you keep the app.
Purchases
Misheard Pro is a one-time purchase handled entirely by Apple through the App Store. Payment details are given to Apple, never to us; we receive no card number, name or address. The app asks Apple whether the purchase exists on your Apple Account in order to unlock the paid features.
Children
Misheard does not receive student practice audio, transcripts or scores. There are no student accounts or central score dashboards. Recognition is on-device by default; turning that setting off may send audio to Apple. Users can choose to share word lists as links. Follow your school’s approval and consent requirements.
The only form on this site is the teachers' free-copy form, which asks an adult educator for their own work address. It is not for students, nothing about a student is asked for or stored, and a student never needs to fill anything in to use a word list a teacher hands out.
Your rights and your control
Unless you have asked for a teacher's free copy, there is no data of yours for us to hand over, correct or erase: nothing from the app reaches us, so we have none. If you did use that form, see What the website stores. Write to us and it goes. Everything else sits with you, on the device:
- Settings → Delete practice history removes every session, take and saved recording.
- Settings → Delete all my words removes your word list.
- Settings → Delete all recordings removes saved audio while keeping your scores.
- Settings → Reset Misheard removes everything.
- Deleting the app removes all of it.
- Microphone and speech recognition permissions can be withdrawn at any time in iOS Settings → Privacy & Security.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, the date at the top of the page changes with it. If a future version of Misheard ever collects something it does not collect today, that will be described here before the feature ships, not after.
