Dictation practice for iPhone and iPad

Practice the words your phone gets wrong.

Misheard is a dictation practice app for iPhone and iPad. Say a word or phrase, see what speech recognition transcribed, and try coaching suggestions based on the result. No app account needed.

Free for 14 days, then $4.99 USD once. iPhone and iPad, US English. Regional prices may vary.

Illustration of a phone with a sound wave, flanked by a speech bubble showing a scribbled mistake and another showing a checkmark, representing dictation being corrected.

Quick clarification: this has nothing to do with misheard song lyrics. It is about the words you say every day, and what your phone types instead.

The other way

See what recognition heard. Practice your next attempt.

Names, technical terms and everyday phrases can come back differently from what you intended. Misheard shows you the transcript so you can compare attempts.

Try a short practice session with your own words. Recognition results depend on the device, microphone, accent, background noise and surrounding words.

Misheard does not modify iOS dictation or integrate with another dictation system. Results in Messages, an ambient scribe or a headset system must be checked separately.

How it works

Say it. See it. Fix it. Say it again.

Illustrative practice example. Your transcript and results may differ.

You saidCall Aoife.
Phone heardCall Eva.
TryTry a clearer f in "ee-fa," then compare the next transcript. This is a suggestion based on the text, not a diagnosis of your pronunciation.
Next tryCall Aoife. ✓

Coaching suggests a possible adjustment based on the returned transcript. It is not an analysis of your speech sounds, and suggestions can be wrong. Try again and compare the results; improvement is not guaranteed.

For teachers

Make a list, send a link, and thirty students practice tonight.

Use it for spelling lists, sight words, this week's vocabulary, or the minimal pairs your ESL class keeps mixing up. Build the list once, share the link, and every student who opens it gets the same drill on their own iPhone or iPad.

You do not need an account, and neither do they. You do not even need the app to build a list: make one at misheard.app/l and share the link from there. The teachers' page has the grade lists already printed as codes, and a maker that turns a folder of your own word files into a page of them.

Misheard has no student accounts or teacher dashboard. Scores stay on the student’s device. Speech recognition runs on your device by default. If you turn off “Keep speech on device,” audio may be sent to Apple for recognition. Misheard does not receive your practice audio or transcripts. Follow your school’s requirements before classroom use.

Works for coaches, parents, and anyone who has ever been asked to "say it again."

Fit

Who this is for.

Anyone who dictates for a living. Clinic notes between patients. Case files in the car. Site reports, inspection findings, the follow-up email you talk out on the walk back. Repeated recognition errors can mean more time spent correcting text.

People whose name the phone refuses to learn. Teachers with a list and a class. ESL learners, and the people who teach them. And anyone who has said "never mind" to Siri more than once this week.

If your phone gets you right every time, you do not need this. Send it to someone whose phone does not.

Rolling it out to a team? There are pages for healthcare, warehouses, field service, trucking, and public safety.
